Hi, I’m Shi!

The face behind the flowers.

My love for flowers began at an early age. My style has been shaped equally by the whimsy of wildflowers, and the deliberate chaos of an English cottage garden. I am not one for tidy, immaculate rows - it just isn’t my style. Give me intentional disorder over meticulously spaced plants any day of the week.

I spent most of my life on the Westcoast of Canada, growing up on Vancouver Island. Beneath the giants of trees lay a vast network of flora and fauna. I spent much of my childhood playing among the cedars and the ferns, with the soundtrack of the Pacific Ocean in the background.

In 2022 we moved to The Farm, sight unseen. We yearned for space to grow for our family, something we seemed to be getting less and less of on the Island. It was a huge change and one that set us up for success - however we didn’t realize it at the time.

At first the property we bought had little in the way of a garden. Over the last four years I have picked away at a 1/4 acre space near our house and have established over two dozen in-ground garden beds in that time. In addition to that, our Sunflower Patch, Sunshine off 49, occupies another 1/4 acre of growing space that has been carved out from an old horse pasture.

I am passionate about nature and art and believe that the two often intertwine.

On Vancouver Island I was employed as a Mental Health & Addictions Worker, working my way to a degree in Social Work, when I began to co-facilitate Art Therapy classes. It was there that I found my true calling - helping people feel better through art. For some, creativity opens up doors that they didn’t even realize were there.

Art doesn’t heal by itself. It holds the door and ushers you into a place that allows you the room to heal.

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” – Pablo Picasso

I am a firm believer that creativity breeds connection. Connection not just to ones community, but to oneself. Creativity does not equate perfection. Creativity is allowing yourself to be imperfect, to embrace the flaws that make you unique. It is a process of self-discovery, unearthing parts of you that have never been exposed. A process that can be unnerving at times, but also extremely fulfilling.

You don’t have to be an artist to make art.

You don’t have to be a creative to create.

You just have to show up.
