Pasture-raised Cattle & Forest-raised Pigs

Welcome to The Farm on Dead Horse Flats! We operate a quarter-section of land, approximately 150 acres, on one of the original Homesteads in Bonanza Alberta. We started our little herd this past year when a bottle-fed calf needed a home. He quickly warmed our hearts to more animals, and soon we took in a pregnant Sow, and two-dozen chickens. This spring we will welcome more calves and piglets onto our farm as we continue to grow our herd.

These animals play a crucial part in our farm plans, if not THE critical part. Without animals to help, fertilizing a wide swath of dirt is a task and a half. Besides, we all have to eat.

We wish to operate as near to a closed-loop system as possible. Seeds are collected from food and flowers that have been grown in the garden. The fields are cultivated for grain, which is used for consumption and animal feed. Perennial grasses are grown for hay. Any waste from either, gets turned back into the ground, fed to the animals, or placed into the compost. We focus primarily on raising heritage breeds of pigs and as they are more suitable to our unforgiving climate. Manure and intentional cover-cropping renews the soil in the gardens, while the practice of AMP (Adaptive Multi-Paddock) grazing will rejuvenate the fields with the help of cattle. Pigs raised in the forest can dig and burrow to their hearts content. Our goal is to give our animals the absolute best life before their one inevitably bad day.

This Deutz tractor was redeemed from a field after nearly two-decades of weathering harsh Canadian winters. After some TLC she continues to surprise us. No computers to glitch, just pure mechanics. As intended.
